Songs for a New World (2021)

EWU's second virtual show that they were finally able to preform on stage. The show was filmed and streamed instead of performed live but the show had a full set, costumes, and lights just like any other show. It is a story of change and crossroads, a collection of songs showcasing the turning points in the characters lives. It was incredibly popular for its run on Broadway but I wanted to stray away from any design choices used for the Broadway show.

The director wanted the poster to convey the dawn of a new age, and so the imagery of the sunrise came into play. Most of the stories take place within the city so the city scape was another important element of the poster. The show is ultimately about people so there are people hidden throughout the city scape for those who look close enough. The textures and font are heavily inspired by the music in the show itself. There are elements of Jazz, Pop and Gospel in the musical score and I wanted the typography in the poster to reflect that.

This show, at least for the EWU theatre, marked the return to the main stage. The poster wasn't only promotion for the show it was a reminder that the world we live in now is far different than the one before. It conveys hope and anticipation for the new world to come. I worked with a team of artists to create the social media elements and promotion of the show, it was fun to head an artistic collaborative effort that meant so much to so many people.
