She Kills Monsters (2020)

She Kills Monsters is a virtual show that was presented through live stream, something never attempted at EWU Theatre before. Adapting to the pandemic was difficult but ultimately a fantastic learning experience for all involved. Working closely with the Director, actors, costume designers and fellow scenic designers, I created over 40 illustrations and animated video queue’s for the show in lieu of the fight scenes required for the action packed Production.

It is a story about love, loss, sisterhood, imagination, friendship and chopping off limbs. After the death of her sister, Agnes the average teen girl seeks to understand her geeky sister better by playing a dungeons and dragons campaign that her sister never got to finish. I was in charge of creating the world in which the adventure takes place. every image including the poster needed to be hand drawn on notebook paper (Digitally of course).

The images include illustrated versions of every character, “vs” cards for battle scenes and queue’s that pan across sweeping maps and imposing monsters. It was a challenge to work with video and animations throughout this process but it was a fantastic way to learn something new and practice character drawing. the most fun I’ve ever had working on a professional project, I hope to work on more like it in the future...
